Emergency Education

My father loved predicting the weather. He used his knowledge, experience and a tap on the barometer to hand out advice on what to wear for the day, pack for your holiday or whether it would be a good year for the farmers. His information was local, based on the past not the future.

Today technology allows meteorologists to predict local and global weather events into the future. Seismologists can predict earthquakes. The world now waits for natural disasters.

The time of waiting provides a unique opportunity. We wait, we are on the threshold. We can plan, we can prepare, we can educate for emergency responses. We can work with communities to understand their needs.

People facing natural disaster enter a time of uncertainty, displacement and lack of control. With this forewarning we are in a position to help them navigate the liminal and personal challenges they will face in the lead up to and in the aftermath of the disaster.
